Don,

I know what you are wrestling with, I used to think I didn't want any late calves to screw up my weaning, weights, etc. But I have come to the conclusion that an early July calf (before the 10th) is OK, I just wean them with the rest even if they are a little young and get them on feed early and with our relatively mild winters they will be caught up in time for breeding at 18 months.

Anyway, I have decided that is better than having an open cow that will inevitably get too fat because she is not nursing a calf and then be at a greater risk for not breeding the next year. That has been my experience rather than breeding earlier in the season.
