I would agree that an early July calf is still old enough to wean with the others. After about 7/10 or 12th, they seem to need a longer "mother time". Obviously, early July calves will be smaller and may need to be fed seperately in order to grow enough for 18 month breeding, but that is much better then a dry cow. From an economic standpoint, a dry cow just costs money and like Sherri says, they may get too fat and not breed! Dry cows must be kept on a maintenance diet if you want them to cycle early. Tough to do when the pastures are lush in summer.
