I use 8oo pound round bales. To keep the animals from sleeping on them I use the big round horse style feed-rings. These have loops on the top of them rather than holes. The elk, even with antlers, simply drop in between the loops with their heads. Works great. The elk usually get to eat all of the feed. One suggestion though. Make sure you have at least 10 elk for this style or they can't eat the hay quick enough before it spoils. 10 elk should get about a week out of each bale.
