Hard antler with velvetted herd sires

How safe is it to mix velvetted herd sires with a sire who was left in hard antler after removal from the cow herds? I have no experience with this and do not want my unantlered stags to be injured if stupid enough to challenge the antlered stag. They are separated by a 40 foot runway at the present time but appear to want to rumble if put together.
