Harrington Elk Ranch

Retirement Sale

Yes, folks, I am going to retire to get back on my horse to ride off into the sunset. I will be selling my entire elk herd (200+) and the ranch. The elk are located four miles down the road from the main part of the ranch and the land consists of approx. 285 acres with 120 fenced for elk, a first class elk facility, a large hay storage shed, and a partially completed 2,700 sq. ft. house. This land is 16 miles from downtown Steamboat Springs, where the ski slope is home to many Olympic skiers and snowboarders. Once the elk herd is sold, I will be listing the land for sale with a local real estate agency. In the meantime, I will be glad to talk with anyone who may want to purchase this land prior to the listing. Oh, by the way, the facility is heavy duty and will handle bison without any problems.

About The Elk

My simple philosophy on raising elk (or any animal, for that matter) has been to treat them like you would want to be treated. Through love, kindness, patience and a geniune respect for their praticular behavior and instincts a level of trust can be developed to provide a healthy environment for both the animals and the humans working with the animals. As a result, my elk are friendlier than normal and work through the facility without a lot of stress to them and us. People who have bought my elk will attest to their friendly, laid back dispositions.

My breeding strategy was solidified five years ago when I bought a full share of Dakota Pride semen. I had some fine beginning stock from the Prock Elk Ranch, but I needed the antler mass that only the RJ 700 progeny had at the time. I strongly believed that a large mass would benefit both the velveting bulls as well as the trophy bulls, so all new elk I acquired from that day forward had mass with a big top, or mass with a big beam spread and symmetry. My elk now reflect the necessary characteristics for both the velvet and the trophy bulls. Genes are very important, but breeding was intentionally used to enhance characteristics for velvet or hard antler, and big bodied females for easy calving.

I have a little over 100 females (2-8 years old) ready for breeding this Fall, 15 hard antler bulls (2-4 years old), 8 exceptional breeding bulls, 34 spikers, and 48 calves (29 heifers and 19 bulls) from this year. I still have Dakota Pride semen available, but I will save that for some special purchasers.

Bloodlines available in the cows: Apollo, Bubba, Buster, Mr. Handsome, Dakota Pride, Phantom 8, Phantom King, Phantom Prince, and SOPE (Son of Oak Point Eli).

Bloodlines available in the bulls: Bubba, Buster, Mr. Handsome, Dakota Pride, Phantom 8, Phantom King, Phantom Prince, SOPE, and Manitoba Weapon.

Bloodlines for the 2001 calves: Dakota Pride, Durango, SOPE, Phantom 8, and Phantom King.

I invite all of you to visit the ranch to preview my elk for sale. TB free accreditation, 3 year CWD monitored, all elk are NAEBA registered and willing to share all data on the computer and registration papers. Price ranges are available upon request, but specific prices on individual animals will only be discussed at the ranch. Package pricing will be available and lodging can be made available with prior notice.
