Beaverhorn Elk Ranch was established in 1986. The original herd came from the Rush Johnson Elk Ranch in MO. We started with four cows and one bull. They were fenced in on three acres. We now have 40 acres fenced and over 100 head.
Our mission is to maintain a herd of 100 bulls and cows, to harvest 500 pounds of velvet antler for market and sell 35 calves each year. We will sell only Elk which are accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and registered with the North American Elk Breeders Association.
Many years ago Rocky Mountain Elk roamed these mountains with their antlers towering nine feet in the air. Their habitat has long since given way to development.Our main task is to help preserve this majestic animal in a safe and healthy environment, as they may well be the alternative livestock of the future.
We are located in the Appalachian mountains near Boone, North Carolina, close to many mountain attractions and ski resorts. The elk enjoy twenty degrees in winter and mild summers. Pastures here are good for nine months of the year and plenty of hay for the rest.
We suggest that future elk ranchers visit and take a tour at feeding time. If they care to stay over, there are motels near by or rent our bunk house which sleeps seven, or the lake house which sleeps four. If you stay over you are welcome to fish in the pond, pet and feed the horses and our Golden Retrievers.
